We recently got to chat with the talented singer, Kiiara, prior to her new single release! Check out our interview and her new single “Never Let You” Below!
For readers who aren’t aware of you and your music, can you share with us how you began your musical journey?
I started writing for hours a day because it really helped me cope with my anxiety. I wrote “Gold” on a classical guitar and the mp3 sat on my computer for a couple years til a friend of mine kept asking me if he could mess with it. He asked me so many times I started to get annoyed so I was finally like, “Fine here’s the song ughhhh.” Then one night towards the end of the session (it was like 3 or 4am) we recorded the new version and dipped. The next day we listened to it, the producer messed with it for 10 minutes or so, then closed his laptop and it was done.
Tell us more about your new song “Never Let You“! We’re obsessed with it!
“Never Let You” is about me wanting to quit music. For a couple months I was really questioning why I ever started making music. I was wondering what my life would have been like if I had never picked up a guitar and written “Gold.”
What did your process look like for “Never Let You” ? Do you have any fun writing or production experiences?
The day I wrote “Never Let You” I drove to the studio with my manager on the phone because I wasn’t comfortable enough to drive completely alone. Those who know me knooooow that I do not drive. It’s very rare that I do. When I got to the studio I sat on the couch and was like, “Damn, I’ve been going thru it.” I vented a Lil to Omega and Tim (the producers) and then they played this guitar riff and I was like, “Can I hop on the mic right now? I have an idea.” And they were like yeah one sec, and then I got on the mic and wrote: “Never Let You.” It was one of those songs that just happens quickly in one session. That moment was like a therapy session.
When creating a song, are you involved heavily with the production and creative processes (Cover art, photoshoots, merch) etc. If so, what was the experience like for “Never Let You!?”
Yes, I’m usually heavily involved when creating a song. With “Never Let You” I wrote the entire top line. I really wanted to experiment with this one and instead of trying to write a pop song or anything even remotely catchy, I approached it as telling a story. I needed to vent. I had a lot on my mind and was tired of suppressing how I really feel.
We’re so excited to hear about your debut album! Can you give us some insight on what to expect from your debut record?!
You can expect growth with both lyrics and production. And a lot more transparency. I really wanna let people into my world with this album because I never really allowed people to get to know me in the past and over the past few years.
